Save Thekla – Bristol (UK)

Save Thekla. Yesterday we could read from Bristol Post, thekla was under threat due to housing plan.

Its future could be in jeopardy if plans are approved on Wednesday.

But the intimate club, which is moored in the Mud Dock area of Bristol’s Floating Harbour, could now be facing a genuine fight for survival as planners look set to give the green light to a nearby residential development at Redcliffe Wharf, which plans to turn three derelict buildings into affordable homes, office and leisure space.

The planning committee meets on Wednesday (November 8) to make a decision on the application which has been recommended for approval by officers – although planning documents do detail that the city council’s own Pollution Control Team recognise the need for a new noise survey to take into account noise from Thekla over the weekend.

If the application is approved, and Thekla is forced into closure, it will have a disastrous impact on Bristol’s music scene and night-time economy, claims charity The Music Venue Trust, which aims to preserve venues within the UK.

DHP, the company which owns Thekla, has raised several concerns over the application including their claim that the noise assessment carried out was ‘woefully inadequate’ as it took place on a Monday and Tuesday night when the venue may not even have been open.

if this development goes ahead with inadequate soundproofing, Will leave Thekla vulnerable to noise complaints from its new neighbouring residents.

Across the UK, an estimated 35% of grassroots music venues closed down between 2007 and 2015, many due to issues like this.

Let’s not let this happen to Thekla!  #savethekla

Other Bristol venues have battled to stay open in the face of planning applications too, including The Fleece, which launched a petition to fight the plan which threatened it three years ago.

Organisations including DHP, UK Music and Music Venues Trust are now campaigning to try and keep Thekla afloat.
